What Is Mastering Strategy?

Mastering Strategy is a six-module leadership development program for intact leadership
teams.

It is designed to help teams build strategic capability together – not by listening passively to presentations, but by working through the disciplines required to make strategy succeed in real organizational conditions.

The program focuses on the leadership team as the unit of development. Participants learn together, apply concepts to real strategic issues, and build the shared language, disciplines, and tools needed to think strategically, align around priorities, and execute with greater consistency.

Mastering Strategy is especially valuable for organizations that want their leadership team to move beyond episodic planning and develop a more consistent approach to strategic leadership.

What the Program Helps Teams Do

01Understand strategy as an ongoing leadership discipline
02Create shared context for strategic decisions
03Identify the real issues affecting direction and execution
04Test assumptions and interpret change more effectively
05Make clearer strategic choices
06Align people, systems, and resources around priorities
07Strengthen accountability and execution discipline
08Keep strategic priorities visible through regular leadership discussions, progress reviews, and follow-up decisions

The program does not simply teach strategy concepts. It helps leadership teams practice the
disciplines required to think strategically, make clear choices, align priorities, and execute
with consistency.

Six Modules. One Integrated Leadership Discipline.

This opening module establishes strategy as a leadership discipline, not simply a planning exercise.

Participants examine why strategies often break down, how leadership teams influence strategic success, and why collective capability matters. The module introduces the core disciplines required for strategy to move from intent to action.

Leadership teams begin by developing a shared understanding of their strategic context, organizational identity, current challenges, and the role they must play in making strategy work.

Participants work on:

  • the difference between strategy and strategic planning
  • why strategy fails in execution
  • the leadership team’s role in strategic success
  • organizational identity and strategic context
  • the foundations of strategic capability

This module strengthens the team’s ability to interpret complexity, uncertainty, and change.

Leadership teams explore how different functions can look at the same information and draw different conclusions. They examine assumptions, biases, external forces, emerging trends, and strategic signals that may affect the organization’s future.

The focus is not simply on gathering more information. It is on developing a shared discipline for making sense of information together.

Participants work on:

  • strategic thinking as a team discipline
  • insight, foresight, and interpretation
  • assumption testing
  • environmental scanning
  • emerging risks and opportunities
  • strategic issues that require leadership attention

This module examines the organizational conditions that either support or obstruct execution.

Even a strong strategy can fail if the organization’s culture, structure, systems, governance, incentives, resources, and leadership practices are misaligned. Participants examine how execution is shaped by the environment in which people work.

The module helps leadership teams identify where the organization is set up to support strategy and where hidden friction may be slowing progress.

Participants work on:

  • organizational conditions that support or obstruct execution
  • culture, structure, systems, and governance
  • decision rights and accountability
  • resource and capacity alignment
  • leadership practices that reinforce or dilute strategy
  • sources of execution friction

This module focuses on the leadership discipline required to turn strategic direction into clear choices and focused execution.

Leadership teams examine how priorities are clarified, trade-offs are made, resources are focused, and accountability is established. They learn how goals, objectives, initiatives, measures and milestones work together to give practical meaning to an organization’s strategy—without turning every important activity into a strategic priority.

The module also considers how AI can help leaders analyze alternatives, test assumptions and explore the implications of different choices. Leadership judgment remains essential in deciding what matters most, what the organization will—and will not—pursue, and where its resources should be concentrated.

This module helps leadership teams develop a more disciplined approach to moving from broad strategic direction to focused decisions and coordinated action.

Participants explore:

  • establishing clear strategic priorities
  • making explicit choices and trade-offs
  • distinguishing strategic priorities from operational work
  • connecting goals, objectives and initiatives
  • using measures and milestones to clarify expectations
  • assigning meaningful accountability and ownership
  • using AI to examine options and test assumptions
  • maintaining focus when new demands arise

This module focuses on how strategy is translated into coordinated action across the organization.

A strategy cannot succeed if people do not understand it, believe it matters, know how it affects their work, or see leaders reinforcing it consistently. Participants examine how leadership signals, communication, systems, behaviors, and routines either mobilize or dilute execution.

The module helps teams strengthen the connection between strategic direction and day-to-day organizational behavior.

Participants work on:

  • leadership signals
  • strategic communication
  • cross-functional alignment
  • systems and routines that reinforce priorities
  • mobilizing people around strategy
  • helping functions work together around shared priorities

The final module focuses on sustaining execution discipline over time.

Many strategies lose momentum because review practices are weak, assumptions are not revisited, accountability fades, and leadership attention moves elsewhere. This module helps teams design the cadence, routines, and feedback loops required to keep strategy active.

Participants leave with a clearer understanding of how they will continue leading strategy after the program ends.

Participants work on:

  • execution discipline
  • regular leadership meetings and progress reviews
  • progress review practices
  • feedback and learning loops
  • adapting without losing focus
  • sustaining strategic alignment over time

How It Works

Mastering Strategy is designed as a practical working experience for leadership teams, not a passive training course.

Each module combines practical teaching, facilitated discussion, team exercises, structured tools, and application to real strategic issues. Participants work together as a leadership team, building a common language and shared approach to strategy.

The program can be delivered over several months, allowing time between modules for reflection, application, and assignment work.

Delivery Options

Mastering Strategy can be delivered in a way that fits the organization’s needs, capacity, and internal resources.

Mastering Strategy provides an experienced facilitator to guide the leadership team through all six modules. The facilitator leads the workshops, manages the process and helps the team engage in productive strategic discussion while keeping the program on track.

This option is best suited to organizations that want Mastering Strategy to take responsibility for providing a capable facilitator who is prepared to deliver the program as designed.

The client designates its own facilitator to deliver all six modules. This may be an internal facilitator or an external facilitator the organization has worked with, knows by reputation or selects independently.
Mastering Strategy provides the complete program materials and Train-the-Trainer support to prepare the facilitator to deliver the program effectively and as designed.

This option is best suited to organizations that already have access to a capable facilitator, want to build internal facilitation capacity or prefer to work with someone who already understands their organization and its leadership team.

Additional Cohorts

Clients may also extend Mastering Strategy to additional leadership teams, business units, departments, divisions, or functional groups, with preferred pricing available for additional cohorts.

This is especially valuable when the organization wants to build a common strategic language and leadership discipline across multiple parts of the enterprise.

Strategy Application Support

Mastering Strategy is the core program. It is designed to build the leadership team’s shared capability to think, decide, align, and execute strategy together.

In some situations, a leadership team may also benefit from focused advisory support to apply the program’s disciplines to a specific strategic issue, planning challenge, execution priority, or strategy restart.

This support is not a substitute for Mastering Strategy. It is a practical way to help the team apply what it is learning to real strategic work.

Strategy Application Support May Be Useful When Your Team Needs To:

01Clarify a Strategic Issue Before or During the Program
02Apply the Program to a Live Business Challenge
03Restart a Strategy that has Lost Momentum
04Align Around Execution of a Critical Initiative
05Prepare for a Major Strategic Decision
05Translate Strategic Priorities into a Practical Execution Roadmap

Mastering Strategy builds the capability. Strategy Application Support helps apply it.
