Helping a Senior Team Lead the Whole Organization, Not Just Their Functions

Shifted an executive team from functional silo mentalities to unified, cross-functional enterprise-level leadership.

A for-profit company had a strong senior leadership team. Each executive ran their function well. Sales focused on growth, operations on delivery, finance on profitability, HR on talent, and technology on systems and scalability.

As the company grew, the CEO could see that the senior team needed to work differently. Each leader was doing a good job in their own area, but many of the company’s most important issues now cut across functions. Decisions were still being made too independently, problems were not always surfaced early enough, and different departments were not always working from the same understanding of the priorities.

We facilitated leadership sessions focused on enterprise-level leadership. The team examined where functional priorities competed with enterprise priorities, where cross-functional dependencies slowed execution, where inconsistent signals were being sent, and which strategic priorities required shared ownership.

The sessions helped leaders distinguish between functional issues and whole-business issues. Meetings became less about reporting from each department and more about resolving issues affecting the entire organization.

The company gained stronger cross-functional decision-making, clearer shared ownership, fewer conflicting messages, and greater CEO confidence in the senior team’s ability to lead the whole business.

The shift was from functional leadership to true senior team leadership.
