A membership organization was under pressure to provide its members with greater value. Member expectations were changing, engagement was uneven, and some traditional programs were no longer having the same impact.
The board wanted the association to be more responsive. Staff agreed but needed better direction before investing time and resources in new programs or services. Everyone agreed that member value mattered. The harder question was what kind of value the association should focus on delivering.
We designed and facilitated a board/staff session focused on member value and strategic priorities. The discussion looked at how members experienced value, which services were central to the association’s role, which were less essential, and where member needs appeared to be changing.
The session helped the board provide clearer direction without getting into operational detail. It also gave staff a better basis for deciding where to focus program development, communication, and resources.
The organization came away with a clearer understanding of its member value proposition and a smaller number of priorities to support it.
Rather than trying to respond to every possible member request, the association became more focused on where it could create the greatest value.
